If a guy can't make you hot in bed, can they tell? Those that lower they ego?

My bf and I started making out on his bed, 1st bf btw.. and he did not make me hot. I told him we won't go further than making out, but he still made out with me and licked my ears... I guess eh was still trying. Is this normal? I'm not a frigid person, I'm really am compassionate and have a sense of humor.
