Bringing stuffed animals to China?

My boyfriend and I are going to China in August. He bought me a Paddington Bear a few years ago, and we take him everywhere we go (which makes for some hilarious travel photos). Someone told us we might not want to bring the bear on this trip, because a customs officer might tear him apart looking for drugs or contraband. We never had this problem going anywhere in Europe or USA, but we would be devastated if that happened, so if there's any chance we'll just leave him home. Does anyone know if stuffed animals are safe to bring to China?
